yoga at amrita

amrita yoga classes begin with quiet meditation for opening into the process of yoga and awareness that occurs in the present moment, and an invocation for connecting to the timeless practice of yoga. Class structure includes poses and techniques drawn from alignment principles infused with physical therapy principles, inquiry, breathing practices, relaxation poses, and a closing meditation. The poses we choose are based on seasonal rhythms, the level of the class and the students, rehabilitation needs, and a progression toward a specific goal within the broader context of yoga.

All of our teachers are passionately interested in the inner experience of yoga, that experience which will translate off the mat into daily life (where the really advanced poses happen!). Students can expect a safe and structured experience with room for personal inquiry and understanding. Our director, Sarahjoy, chooses the over-arching focus for classes based on the season as well as the progress of the students from month to month and year to year.

Structure creates the framework for experience, in asana, in class, and in life. Our teachings honor the ancient tradition of yoga and the framework of the path our ancestor yogis discovered. Sensitivity allows for exploration, inquiry, and courageous journeys into new territory. Ancient yogis examined the nature of consciousness from their personal quest. We’re encouraged to utilize a similar process as we study ourselves in the context of contemporary yoga.

All of the teachers on staff at amrita have been extensively trained in alignment principles. Several of us are also training with the physical therapists from Therapeutic Associates, Inc. We each have a background in meditation and pranayama. Our collective life experience also includes counseling and art therapy training, communication training, motherhood and fatherhood, dance, movement therapy, massage therapy, and excursions in backpacking, meditation, and gardening!
